Our Whakapapa lodge sits in a commanding position over a valley, nestled between Skippers Canyon and the main ski trail. It provides great opportunities for people watching from the balcony, against the backdrop of beautiful Mt Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. During the ski season the lodge is surrounded by snow, so you can ski in & ski out. A stay at this lodge is truly an experience that few forget.

It's a 2 minute walk down from the top of the Rangatira chairlift, or a 20 minute walk up from the main carpark. Click here for our location on Google Maps.

We welcome skiers, snowboarders, rockclimbers, alpinists, trampers - anyone who's keen on outdoor adventure. During the ski season, our custodian will cook breakfast and dinner, and even cater for dietary restrictions or allergies.

We're always keen to welcome new members. If you're not yet a member, check us out - we're pretty sure you'll want to join after you stay.

About Whakapapa

In winter, Whakapapa is one of NZ's largest skifields, with a great variety of challenging trails suitable for a range of ability levels. The majority of the 67 runs are geared towards intermediate skiers, with about 25% considered advanced. There are several trails for beginners, as well as the large ‘Happy Valley’ area which is separate from the ski field.

In summer, it's the perfect base to go rockclimbing on Meads Wall, or go on scenic walks in Tongariro National Park.

Whakapapa lodge build

The foundation members of our club donated time, skills and resources to build a lodge that would stand the rigours of the harsh conditions found on the mountain. The result of their efforts is a two storey, “Lockwood style” building located to the left and just below the top of the Rock Garden chair lift on the Whakapapa ski field.
